Trust & Safety

How StorageFinder Protects Hosts and Storers

Identity, payments, and evidence. The three things that make vehicle storage safety actually work.

Verified Members
Stripe Secure Payments
The Handover

If you have ever wondered is StorageFinder safe, the answer comes down to three things working together. Identity that we actually check. Payments that move through Stripe and never through a host's personal account. And a photographic record of every booking that both sides can refer back to.

Peer-to-peer storage is built on trust, but trust on its own is not a system. So we layered the system on top of it. This guide walks through exactly how the platform handles safety, who is on the other side of the booking, where the money sits, and what happens when something does not go to plan.

The Foundation

The three things that matter

Every secure storage Australia marketplace lives or dies on the same three questions. Who is the other person? Where is the money? And what evidence exists if there is a disagreement?

Identity

Every member verifies their phone and email before they can list or book. Photo ID earns a Verified Member badge.

Payments

All money moves through Stripe. Hosts never see your card number. Storers never need to hand over cash.

Evidence

The Handover captures timestamped photos at arrival and departure, kept against the booking record.

Identity

Verified Members: who can book, who can list

A trust and safety storage marketplace only works if you know who is on the other end. So we start there.

When you create a StorageFinder account, you verify your email and your mobile phone before you can list a space or send a booking request. This catches throwaway accounts at the door. If a number bounces or an inbox does not exist, the account cannot transact.

The next step is the Verified Member badge. To earn it, members upload government-issued photo ID through our secure verification process. The badge sits on the profile. Hosts can choose to require verified storers only. Storers can filter for verified hosts.

What Verified Members actually means

  • Confirmed mobile number (SMS code on signup)
  • Confirmed email address (link on signup)
  • Photo ID matched to account name (badge tier)
  • Linked Stripe payout account for hosts (KYC by Stripe)

It is the same identity layer Airbnb and Uber run. Boring, repetitive, effective.

Payments

Stripe payments: how the money actually moves

Most people get this part wrong about peer-to-peer storage safe practice. They assume the host takes the money. On StorageFinder, the host never touches it.

1
Storer pays

Booking total charged to card via Stripe at time of booking.

2
Funds in escrow

Stripe holds the funds. Host has not been paid yet.

3
Booking starts

Once The Handover is complete, payout schedule kicks in.

4
Host paid

Stripe pays the host directly into their nominated bank account.

For storers

  • Your card number never goes to the host
  • Refunds processed back to your original card
  • Disputes can be escalated through Stripe's standard chargeback process
  • Payment receipts stamped against the booking

For hosts

  • Paid on a clear schedule, not when the storer remembers
  • Failed payments flagged before the storer arrives
  • No ABN setup required to accept storage payments
  • Bank account is never visible to the storer

If a payment fails, the booking does not start. Simple.

Two photos. Clear record.

The Handover

Most storage disputes come down to one question. What did it look like when the vehicle arrived? The Handover is how we answer that.

For storers

The Handover proves the condition of your vehicle when you left it. If something happens during the storage period, the arrival photo is your starting point.

For hosts

The Handover proves the condition of the space and the vehicle on arrival. If a storer claims you damaged their vehicle, the photo shows the state of the panels, tyres, and paintwork when they parked it.

The photos are not a replacement for insurance. They are a record. Insurance pays out faster with a record. Disputes resolve faster with a record. Police take a report more seriously with a record. We retain Handover photos against the booking, so if you need them for a claim or report, they are there.

Access

Identity gates: who can transact

Some marketplaces let anyone book anything the moment they sign up. We do not. Here is what is gated and where.

Hosts can choose to accept only Verified Member storers. Most do for high-value vehicles like boats, caravans, and classics. Some are happy with phone-and-email verified storers for shorter-term car parking. The choice sits with the host.

Resolution

What happens when something goes wrong

Things do go wrong, occasionally. Here is the three-step flow we run.

The three-step flow

1
Message first

The vast majority of issues are misses in communication. Open the in-app chat and message the other party. Most things resolve in fifteen minutes.

2
Reference The Handover

If the disagreement is about condition or damage, the arrival and departure photos do the talking. Pull them up. Both parties can see them.

3
Contact support

If you cannot work it out, contact us. We have the full booking record, messages, Handover photos, and payment trail. We can mediate and hold or release funds.

We do not arbitrate every disagreement. We do step in when one party will not engage, when the evidence is clear, or when there is a safety or fraud issue.

The Honest Bit

What StorageFinder does not cover

This is the part most marketplaces gloss over. We will not.

Insurance

We are a platform, not an insurer. Storers should keep comprehensive vehicle insurance active. Hosts should check their home and contents or commercial property policy.

Third-party damage

Damage caused by people outside the booking is a matter for police and your insurer. The Handover photos and booking records support that claim.

Acts of God

Fire, flood, storm, and similar events are not covered by the platform. Insurance is the right tool there.

The Handover and our booking records support insurance claims. They are not a substitute for cover. Both hosts and storers should maintain their own insurance and consult a licensed broker for advice specific to their circumstances.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is StorageFinder safe to use?
StorageFinder uses Stripe for payments, requires email and phone verification for every member, offers a Verified Member badge for photo ID verified users, and captures timestamped photos at arrival and departure on every booking. Hosts never see your card details and you never need to hand over cash. It is the same trust and safety model used by larger peer-to-peer marketplaces.
How do I know the host is real?
Every host has verified their phone and email before they can list. Hosts can earn a Verified Member badge by uploading photo ID, and they have onboarded through Stripe Connect, which runs its own identity check before they can be paid. You can also message a host through the platform before booking and look at their listing history.
When does the host get paid?
Funds are held by Stripe at the time of booking and released to the host on a clear payout schedule once the booking starts and The Handover is complete. The host never holds your money directly, and refunds are processed back to your original payment method.
What if my vehicle is damaged during storage?
Take photos of the damage and message the host through the app first. Reference the arrival Handover photo for the starting condition. If you cannot resolve it directly, contact StorageFinder support with the booking ID and we will review the evidence. For insurance claims, your comprehensive policy is the right channel, and we can provide booking records and Handover photos to support the claim.
Can I cancel a booking?
Yes. Cancellation terms depend on how close to the booking start date you cancel and the host's listed cancellation policy. Refunds are processed through Stripe back to your original card. The cancellation policy is shown on every listing before you book.
