If you've got space that isn't being used, StorageFinder is how you turn it into income. This guide explains how the platform works from a host's perspective, from creating your listing through to receiving payment.

What StorageFinder does

StorageFinder connects people who need vehicle storage with people who have spare space, driveways, garages, sheds, yards, and paddocks.

Hosts list their space. Storers search, find, and book. StorageFinder handles the payment, the booking record, and the tools to make the arrangement clear on both sides.

You don't need to be a business. Most hosts are households with unused space.

Step 1: Creating your listing

Creating a listing is free and takes about 10 minutes.

You'll be asked to provide:

  • Photos, the most important part. See our guide on what makes a great listing for photo tips.
  • Dimensions, length, width, and height clearance if relevant
  • Space type, driveway, garage, shed, yard, paddock
  • Vehicle types accepted, caravan, boat, car, truck, trailer, or combinations
  • Monthly price, you set this. See our pricing guide if you're unsure.
  • Access details, how storers access the space and during what hours

Once your listing is live, it shows up in search results for storers looking in your area.

Step 2: Receiving and responding to enquiries

When a storer is interested in your space, they'll send an enquiry through the platform. You'll receive a notification.

Respond promptly. Enquiries that go unanswered for more than a day often go elsewhere.

A good first response:

  • Confirms the space is available for their dates
  • Answers any specific questions they asked
  • Invites them to confirm the booking

You're not obligated to accept every enquiry. You can decline if the arrangement doesn't suit.

Step 3: Confirming a booking

Once you and the storer agree on the terms, the booking is confirmed through StorageFinder.

The storer pays through the platform. Payment is held securely until the arrangement begins, it's not released to you immediately. This protects both sides.

Step 4: The Handover

Before the storer's vehicle is parked, both parties complete The Handover.

The Handover is a simple vehicle condition check. Both you and the storer record the current state of the vehicle, any pre-existing marks, dents, or condition notes, using photos and the platform's checklist.

This creates a clear record for both sides. If there's ever a question about damage, The Handover removes any ambiguity about what existed before storage began.

It takes a few minutes and is worth doing every time.

Step 5: Getting paid

Payments on StorageFinder are processed through Stripe, which handles the transaction securely.

How it works:

  • The storer pays at the start of each month (or upfront for shorter arrangements)
  • StorageFinder deducts a service fee
  • The remainder is transferred to your nominated bank account

You'll need to complete Stripe's identity verification process when you set up payouts. This is a standard banking requirement, Stripe needs to verify your identity before it can send money to your account.

Payments are usually transferred within a few business days of the transaction.

Service fees

StorageFinder charges a host service fee on each transaction. The fee covers platform maintenance, payment processing, and the tools that manage the booking.

The exact fee structure is shown in your host dashboard.

Verified Members: what it means

Storers who have completed StorageFinder's verification process carry a Verified Member badge on their profile.

Verification confirms that the person is who they say they are. It doesn't guarantee perfect behaviour, but it does mean they've gone through an identity check.

You'll see a storer's verification status when you review their enquiry. Hosts can choose to only accept enquiries from Verified Members if they prefer.

Ongoing management

Once a booking is running, there's usually very little to manage.

Most storers park their vehicle and leave it. They retrieve it when they need it. Day-to-day interaction is minimal.

Things to stay on top of:

  • Respond to messages from your storer if they contact you
  • Keep your listing updated if anything changes (dimensions, access, availability)
  • Mark your listing as unavailable if you need to end an arrangement
  • Give the agreed notice period before ending any booking

What happens if something goes wrong

StorageFinder's Booking Support is available if there's a dispute that you and the storer can't resolve between yourselves.

The Handover record is the first thing referenced if there's a dispute about vehicle condition. This is why completing it properly matters.

For situations outside of normal disputes, insurance questions, significant damage, Booking Support will guide you through the relevant process.

Ending a booking

To end an arrangement:

  1. Give the storer the agreed notice period (usually outlined in the booking)
  2. Confirm via the platform that the arrangement is ending
  3. Complete a final Handover check when the vehicle is retrieved

Both sides should keep the process clean and documented.

What most hosts find after their first booking

The most common feedback from new hosts:

  • Less effort than expected, most vehicles park and stay
  • The payment process is smooth once Stripe setup is done
  • The Handover gives peace of mind
  • First enquiry usually comes within a week of a good listing going live

If you haven't listed yet and are wondering whether it's worth it, the answer depends on your space and location. For most people with an unused driveway or yard, the first booking more than covers the time spent setting it up.

Got unused space?

Turn your empty driveway, garage, or yard into a steady income stream. Listing is free and takes about five minutes.
